Graduating in India to Prospect Black Gold

With the never ending global thirst for oil and natural gas, the demand for engineers in petroleum technology is on the rise. Simultaneously, in our own country, consequent to the Government of India granting licences to private companies like Essar and Reliance to supplement the public sector companies’ efforts in exploring and refining oil products, the job prospects in this segment too have increased manifold.

In such a scenario it would be ideal for bright youngsters with a technical aptitude to study this subject to chalk out a progressive career. However, the number of institutions teaching petroleum engineering in India is limited. Just a few universities and colleges have graduation courses. One among them is the School of Engineering & Technology functioning under Graphic Era University at Dehradun in Uttarakhand that conducts a four-year B.Tech degree course. Incidentally, this city has been the ‘home’ to India’s premier organisation engaged in tapping petroleum products – Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC).

This course is spread over eight semesters. And the admission is based on joint entrance examination (JEE) in which the students from the stream of physics-chemistry-mathematics with 50% marks in the higher secondary examination can appear. Apart from basic sciences such as chemistry, calculus, differential equations and physics, the students are taught geology subjects like rock and natural gas properties. In addition to extensive lab sessions and field work, the students learn natural gas and petroleum engineering, computer applications and well construction techniques.

There are ample prospects for jobs within the country and abroad. The scholarly lot among the graduates can pursue further studies to obtain masters degree and even conduct research studies for a doctorate leading to PhD in petroleum technology.

The Department of Biotechnology at this university is among the leading B Tech Biotechnology colleges in India.  It boasts of well equipped laboratories for students and research scholars to study Plant Tissue Culture, Animal Cell Culture, Recombinant DNA Technology, Microbiology and Sterilisation facility etc. It also introduced M.Tech course from the academic session of 2012-2013.
